The research group headed by Professor Gabor Orosz at the University of Michigan is collaborating with Commsignia Inc (Santa Clara), a technology leader in the field of connected car (V2X, Car2X) applications, to extend the capabilities of connected automated vehicles (CAV). This project demonstrates the ability to control the motion of a CAV based on V2X communicated information from an object beyond the line of sight that cannot be detected by onboard lidar, radar or camera technologies.
Connected Automated Forward Collision Avoidance (CAFCA) is the name for this new technology that utilizes GPS sensors and wireless vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication to allow the CAV to detect vehicles beyond line-of-sight. The V2V messages are integrated into the onboard control software developed by Professor Orosz’s group and their control algorithms, CAFCA allows a CAV initially traveling at the speed limit to stop in a safe distance behind another car in scenarios when a lidar, radar, or camera-based system would fail to see the vehicle in time. Further development will make CAVs deployable in future connected traffic environment where V2X communication make other vehicles detectable even when they are beyond the line of sight.
The project is supported by Mcity, a public-private partnership between industry, government, and academia established to improve mobility, where Commsignia Inc is an affiliate member.
V2X connectivity is based on secure dedicated short-range communications (DSRC IEEE 802.11p) that shares sensor and vehicle data between vehicles and the surrounding infrastructure. In this project, Commsignia is supplying the Onboard Unit (OBU) as well as it’s end-to-end US DOT SCMS PKI compliant V2X software stack.
